Password AutoFill allows easy login using SamuraiSafe credentials to websites using Safari or other macOS apps that support Password AutoFill. It is particularly convenient using TouchID on supported hardware.

Supported Browsers

Safari supports Password AutoFill. Firefox and Chrome use their own password management mechanisms, they do not support macOS Password AutoFill.

Setup

  1. If you wish to use an iCloud safe, enable iCloud Drive for SamuraiSafe in System Preferences.

  2. Enable SamuraiSafe Extension in
System Preferences / Extensions / Password Autofill (Big Sur, Monterey)
System Settings / Passwords / Password Options (Ventura, Sonoma)
System Settings / General / Autofill & Passwords (Sequoia):

  3. If you wish to use an iCloud safe, it must be visible in the Open iCloud menu. If it isn’t you need to use Move to iCloud to put it there. (SamuraiSafe uses a private iCloud container - not the iCloud Drive folder visible in the Finder.)

  4. Open the desired Autofill safe, then the Use Safe for Password AutoFill action in the File menu. You should get a confirmation dialog. The AutoFill status will also be reflected in the SamuraiSafe AutoFill Preferences tab.

  5. Enable AutoFill web forms for Usernames and Passwords in Safari Preferences.

See Enabling and Using Password AutoFill for more detail.

AutoFill Notes

The quicktype bar is populated with entries in your safe that contain a username, password and valid homepage. If you find the AutoFill quicktype bar isn’t offering you the correct username, ensure the homepage field is correct. Homepage may be set to either the bare website hostname eg. www.google.com, or a complete URL eg. https://www.google.com/login.

Customisation

If further control is required over AutoFill, see AutoFill Settings which is available in the detail view for an entry where the safe is configured for AutoFill in Settings/Passwords. See Customising Password AutoFill.
